Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP Therapy)
Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy, or PRP Therapy, has been effective for relieving arthritis pain, sports related injuries and pain to other tendons and joints. In addition, PRP Therapy may help to accelerate the healing process after some orthopedic surgeries.
The PRP procedure takes a small amount of the patient’s blood and places it in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from other components. The concentrated platelet rich plasma is then re-injected into the point of injury, such as the elbow, knee or hip. The substance releases growth factors to stimulate tissue regeneration and boost the bodies natural healing properties.
There is very little risk of transmissible infection and low risk of allergic reaction because the body’s own blood is being used. Initial improvement in pain symptoms is typically experienced within a few weeks, gradually increasing as the healing process continues.
